Personal Educational Goals

My own education is an ongoing project that will never cease.  I consider myself to be a lifelong learner, and my current long term goal is a PhD.  Ideally my thesis topic would be along the lines of disparity in educational outcomes for same-sex attracted and queer identifying students because I believe that there are equity issues faced by these students and there has not yet been enough research done on this matter.

On a short term, more practical basis, my goals are simpler and achievable.  Within my first year of teaching I aim to complete my VIT accreditation.  I will focus on refining my classroom competence, which will happen as I develop relationships with and receive feedback from students and colleagues.  I hope that throughout the year as I situate myself in the school community and the classroom I can truly begin to apply some of the more theoretical aspects of teaching, such as some negotiated curriculum and elements of critical pedagogy, as well as getting better practiced at ICT resources and ways to incorporate these into my teaching.  I also plan to participate in as much PD as the school will allow, because through PD and association with other education professionals I will have the best chance of learning new teaching techniques and resources

In the mid to long term I hope to solidify my teaching practice and build strong ties within the school environment and the education profession.  I plan to broaden my teaching capabilities through PD and possibly additional university subjects in order to fulfil VIT requirements.  Within five years I hope to be working in a leadership capacity, possibly as a lead teacher or curriculum coordinator, but with a view to still be an active classroom teacher.
